September the 9th sees the release of the long awaited new box set from The Clash called “Soundsystem”. Metropolis engineer Tim Young was chosen by the band to do this historic re-mastering. Tim worked for CBS Records (later Sony) between 1976 and 1993, so he was around during the band’s career. This proved invaluable as he was able to help Sony’s librarians in locating original masters for all of the albums plus bonus material. The mastering was painstakingly carried out by Tim In conjunction with Mick Jones from the band, along with long time Clash engineer Bill Price. The brief was to bring out as much detail in the tracks as they could, so people would comment “I never heard that before!”. They agreed not to over-compress the sound so as to retain as much of the original dynamics as possible. Eventually it was all approved for CD and vinyl release (there will be a vinyl box of all their albums) plus finally Tim was asked to write a brief piece for the book that accompanies the CD’s, his first ever sleeve note.
