This year Metropolis will have its largest presence at the iconic Midem Music Industry conference in Cannes, South of France. Over the last decade Midem has waned in terms of its global industry profile and the more traditional attendees that are major record labels have slowly ebbed away and have been replaced with technology companies such as Spotify, Shazam, Youtube etc. An abundance of independent labels, companies looking to licence IP and repertoire, publishers, distributors and innovators (smaller tech companies who are looking at everything from Sync to Licensing) are all in attendance. In line with the green shoots of recovery that the Global Music industry is showing the volume and quality of companies and individuals that we can meet with is still concentrated more at Midem than it is at any other Music conference industry worldwide and therefore this is our flagship sales and marketing event for the year.
Over the past 5 years, Metropolis has enjoyed a lot of success from this conference (and for the last 5 years has been the only ‘studio’ that has attended Midem) and started out by generating core business work and opportunities such as studio, mixing and mastering service facility work, through to more recently finding licensing partners in international territories for our label catalogue. We also found our Metropolis Korean partner at Midem which has gone on to generate in excess of £50k gross revenue in mastering services from Korea consistently over the last 3 years. This year we are meeting with a potential Chinese, Indian and South American partner to replicate the success we have had in Korea.
This year Metropolis has been invited to participate as a official partner of Midem, as one of the world’s foremost authorities in music production and as an example of a traditional company that has evolved massively in recent years to survive and find new and innovative ways of building sustainable growth and robust business as part of the new music industry. We will be participating in panel discussions, our head of publishing, Ru Hollier is a keynote speaker at the Sync panel, one of our Grammy award winning engineers is speaking on song writing, our head of Studios is speaking on music production, Louis Brown, our head of label is speaking on monetisation of music, our CEO, Ian Brenchley will be speaking about the relevance of a modern day studio in the music industry and the evolution of music production business and in addition to this we are part of Midem’s accelerator programme where the key heads of departments from Metropolis will be engaging with notable industry figures on discussion around other relevant issues the industry is facing at the moment.
Metropolis also has a stand to show off our wares this year, where we will be focusing on Sync and Licensing in addition to the core business services. Part of this activity includes physically showing content that we have created such a Vinyl Metropolis, TV and Online show to garner interest from International licensing partners and to help secure artist talent and involvement from overseas. This physical presence at Midem is also a major opportunity for us to increase our international core business sales through what essential boils down to ‘flag waiving’ to capture passing trade that we otherwise wouldn’t get the opportunity to make them aware of everything we do.
Finally, there are in excess of 6000 delegates in 2016 which we will actively market to, speak to and meet as many as possible through the delegate list which is circulated in advance of the conference. It is a fairly focused database of delegates whereby we can target the most relevant ones to us, arrange meetings in advance to make sure our time spent there is as effective as possible.
